Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold release date expectations, price estimates and upgrades

Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold release date expectations, price estimates and upgrades
We're now less than two months away from Google's highly expected Pixel 10 Pro Fold. This phone will be the latest installment in Google's foldable phones catalogue.

So far, there are two book-style foldables from the Big G – the 2023 Pixel Fold and the 2024 Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

The first Pixel Fold was a mixed bag when it came to hardware and usability, it was nothing to write home about. It arrived with large bezels and a folding screen that couldn't stay open flat, feeling more like a proof of concept.

But just one generation later, its successor – the Pixel 9 Pro Fold – showed improvements in pretty much every aspect. It was (is) a proper rival to the popular Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Will the third iteration of Google's foldable keep up with its predecessor's top quality? Will the 2025 Pixel 10 Pro Fold going to be a big leap forward, or just a minor annual upgrade?

Let's explore! We'll keep updating this space with all the latest details on Google's upcoming folding phone, so stay tuned!

Release date

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is expected to be announced on August 20, 2025. Its official release will likely follow about a month later, in September 2025.

Price

Given Google's consistency in pricing, one would think that the company is likely to retain the $1,799 price tag for the next foldable.

However, a recent report states that Google will actually reduce the Pixel 10 Pro Fold price by $200 and bring in down $1,599.

Even if that doesn't hold true, the upside is that Google tends to reduce prices fairly quickly. Last year's Pixel 9 Pro Fold debuted at $1,799 but is now widely available for $300 less.

Camera

In our review of last year's Pixel 9 Pro Fold, we were a bit underwhelmed with the camera performance, as it didn't quite live up to the "Pro" in the name. While the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will also likely not pack the same great cameras the regular Pixel Pro models do, it will likely be more than serviceable, and just as versatile as one can expect from a flagship phone.

There's been a massive early leak about the Pixel 10 family camera setup.

  • 50MP main camera, Samsung GN8 sensor
  • 10.5 MP ultrawide camera
  • 10.8 MP telephoto camera with 5x zoom
  • 10 MP selfie camera (outer display)
  • 10 MP selfie camera (folding display)

While the incorporation of a 50MP sensor for the main camera could be seen as a minor upgrade, the rest of the cameras – for now, at least – are allegedly the same from the previous Pixel foldable.

The camera bump, that's become a design staple of Google at this point, will likely return, looking exactly the same as before. Whether you dig it or not – at least it's unique and unmistakably Google.

Now, for the good news: the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is rumored to feature a major leap in video stabilization, with performance reportedly comparable to using a dedicated gimbal like the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 – but without any external hardware. This upgrade could dramatically improve handheld video quality, making footage smoother and more professional-looking.

While Pixel phones have long been praised for their photography, this new stabilization tech may help Google finally rival the iPhone in video performance. Combined with existing features like Video Boost, the Pixel 10 signals a serious push by Google to close the video gap with Apple.

Storage

The previous two Google Pixel foldables came with the same two storage options – a base 256GB, and a higher-priced 512GB of storage.

Once again, we find it highly likely that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold won't be breaking any set expectations, and will also offer the following variants:

  • 256GB of storage
  • 512GB of storage

Storage is a tricky discussion nowadays. A lot of people are starting to see up to 256GB of storage as too low for an expensive flagship phone. At the same time, most of the content many users consume is streamed, whether from video or music streaming services, where storage doesn't really matter.

But it inarguably matters if you want to take a lot of photos and videos, especially 4K video at 60FPS, which we expect will be the maximum the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will offer. Those videos can quickly fill up storage, so people who may be affected should consider the 512GB variant.

No expandable storage, of course, as is tradition for current-year flagships; meaning you won't be able to extend your storage with an SD card. So what you get is what you're stuck with, in terms of storage.

Design

While last year's Pixel 9 Pro Fold was a significant design upgrade over the 2023 Pixel Fold, we don't expect any further major design changes for the next iteration. It's reasonable to assume that in 2025, and likely the following few years, future Pixel Folds will not be changing in looks, beyond what we see from the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

This isn't bad news, as the current Pixel 9 Pro Fold is quite polished and unmistakably Google in terms of design.

This was confirmed by an early leak that claims the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will be sort of a clone of its predecessor:

So for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, we can expect a similar premium build quality, with flat, satin metal edges, Gorilla Glass Victus back, thin, even bezels around the folding display, and a square aspect ratio (when unfolded).

On the back of the phone we'll be getting the same large, metallic camera module, and built into the screens – the same cutout selfie cameras (as opposed to the under-screen camera Samsung uses on its Z Fold).

In terms of color options, unless Google surprises us this year, those should be two – Obsidian and Porcelain.

As for weight – we can once again expect the Pixel 10 Pro Fold to weigh about 257 grams, like its predecessor, which is pretty good for a foldable, considering even some traditional phones like the iPhone 16 Pro Max can weigh nearly 230 grams.

Display

*speculative specs

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold will come with a familiar, square folding screen. Currently, we can speculate that it will either remain 8 inches (diagonally) in size, or will increase very slightly. Its cover screen is also likely to again be 6.3 inches (diagonally).

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is expected to receive a meaningful display upgrade, with brighter screens on both its inner and outer panels. According to the report, the foldable's main display may reach 1,850 nits of HDR brightness, while the outer screen could hit 2,050 nits – a roughly 10% improvement over its predecessor.

However, unlike the Pixel 10 Pro, which is reportedly getting a higher PWM refresh rate of 480Hz to reduce eye strain, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is expected to retain the lower 240Hz rate. This could be a drawback for users sensitive to screen flicker. Still, the overall improvements in brightness suggest that Google is working to enhance the viewing experience across its foldable device.

In terms of protection, the cover screen, it being a traditional one, will feature a Gorilla Glass coating (likely Gorilla Glass Victus 2), while the folding screen will be covered by Ultra Thin Glass, as Google calls it.

Battery

While we don't have any leaks or rumors to suggest a battery size increase, the good news is that last year's Google foldable already offered some great battery life.

We expect either the same 4650 mAh battery on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, or slightly greater or lesser, depending on potential internal changes. In our battery testing of the 9 Pro Fold, it lasted 16 hours and 25 minutes of web browsing on a single charge, and 9 hours and 20 minutes of gaming on a single charge. The only test it disappointed with was the video streaming test, where we got 5 hours and 47 minutes. Unless Google's next Tensor processor offers better efficiency, we can probably expect a similar single-day battery life front he Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

As for charging, we speculate that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold with once again bring only 21W of wired charging and 7.5W of wireless charging, which would be far from impressive in 2025, but stay tuned – we'll let you know if any leaks or rumors suggest improvements in that area, as soon as we hear them.

Features and software

The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold will likely run on Android 16 by the time of release, Android 16 itself still being in its developer preview stage. This being a Google phone, which also owns Android, owners of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will enjoy quick software updates, and according to Google – a promised 7 years of OS and security updates overall.

So this would be a smartphone one will be able to stick with for quite a while, before needing to upgrade, thanks to this promised long-term support.

Android 16 will bring increased privacy and security features, especially when it comes to user tracking for advertising purposes. Recent Android versions also bring some fantastic features built specifically for foldables like the upcoming Pixel 10 Pro Fold – split-screen and windowed multitasking, an app dock, and more.

A feature we're still in the dark about is stylus support – Google's current foldables still don't have it, in contrast to Samsung and its Galaxy Fold, among other competitors. No rumors to suggest stylus support is coming, and we're skeptical that Google doesn't consider it a necessity, so don't hold your breath on that.

Meanwhile, Google has been aiming for a truly context-aware assistant. Enter the new AI feature called Magic Cue, previously known as Pixel Sense. Unlike Gemini, which needs to be activated manually, Magic Cue works passively in the background, analyzing your screen and app activity to suggest useful actions or information in real time.

For example, it might pull up your flight number from Gmail if someone asks for it in a message. By integrating with apps like Calendar, Keep, and Messages, and running in a secure environment, Magic Cue aims to make everyday tasks faster and more seamless without user prompts.

Also, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is expected to boot 25% faster than previous models, which should be great if you can't wait for your device to boot.

*speculative specs

Our speculations for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold are currently largely based on what its predecessor is packing. The only notable difference we expect would be the processor, as the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is going to feature a yet-unannounced Google Tensor G5.

Recent leaks regarding the G5 suggest a minor increase in performance, and similarly underwhelming, but present increase in AI processing in particular, which as we know, is the hot new thing nowadays.

The Tensor G5 is to be built by TSMC, the world's largest contract foundry, using a more advanced 3nm process node (N3P) for better performance and energy efficiency. Expected to debut with the Pixel 10, many anticipated exciting new features, including enhanced AI capabilities. However, a tweet from @chunvn8888 suggests the G5 will perform similarly to the G4, with the only major difference being that the G4 was made by Samsung, while the G5 will be manufactured by TSMC:

The Pixel 10 series is shaking things up by ditching Qualcomm and Samsung modems for MediaTek's unreleased T900. This move caught everyone by surprise, as Google was expected to stick with Qualcomm.

While Qualcomm has long dominated flagship Android modems, Google has used Samsung's Exynos chips in past Pixels. But now, MediaTek, known for budget chips, is stepping up with a 5G-ready modem that could give the big players a run for their money. Google's clearly betting on MediaTek's tech for its next-gen flagship.

The GPU (the component that's relied upon for gaming, heavy animations and graphics-demanding apps) on the Tensor G5 is about to get changed as well. Instead of using a well-known Mali GPU, Google might pack Imagination Technologies DXT GPU, which should be more AI-oriented and better for heavier gaming.

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is expected to introduce two major upgrades: a faster ultrasonic fingerprint sensor and support for Qi2 wireless charging. The new sensor should offer improved responsiveness, especially when users have wet or dirty fingers, building on the more secure and reliable tech introduced in past models.

Despite strong face unlock capabilities, Google continues to offer both biometric options for added convenience. Qi2 support will be present, but full functionality will require a compatible magnetic case, similar to what Samsung and OnePlus are doing.

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is set to become the first foldable phone to achieve an IP68 rating, matching the dust and water resistance found in top-tier non-folding smartphones. This is a major upgrade from last year's Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which only had IPX8, meaning it was water-resistant but offered no official protection against dust. Google achieved this improvement by redesigning the hinge to be thinner, which not only helps block out particles but also makes the phone more comfortable to hold.

Should you wait for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold?

You should wait for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold if you're either a folding phone enthusiast or someone looking to get into this exciting form factor for the first time, and have a hard time picking a phone to upgrade to, or start with right now. Sure, the Galaxy Z Fold is tall and narrow, while the other foldable options are largely from Chinese brands that are either hard to get a hold of, or without the brand trust and support you may want – in that case, it's worth waiting to see what the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will be all about. But don't expect any major differences from the 9 Pro Fold… which brings us to…

You should not wait for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold if you're already set on getting the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. We have no reasons to believe that the 10 Pro Fold will offer that much more, enough to be worth the wait, so pulling the trigger on a 9 Pro Fold, especially now that it's discounted, might be a good idea.
